There is no reason why those "C" pieces could not go all around and give you a better distribution of weight. All light fixtures and fittings should/must be protected from water. Could you suport a glass lid on top of those "C" pieces? If so would silcone it in to make it water proof. Not seeing it it would be difficult to give you beter advice.
