Setting up a new 10gal – 40lt Betta Tank can be rather time consuming and expensive.
There has been many hours of planing, research www, e/mails, FishProfiles, many phone calls also 100s of Klm driving.

Here is a list of the products and materials I have bought so far and expect to get very soon.
Tank, heater, driftwood, filter, light & tube, power board & timer, thermometer, timber and paints, substrate, fish, and plants.
What I have spent so far and expect to spend will be a total of Aust$520 = US$395 = Euro315.

I have gone for the top end of the market but a little bit of research I have picked up several good bargains tank 50%, heater 20%, filter Eheim 40% Off. I will also be making the base myself.

Nice to see someone giving their betta something special to live in. I'm sure he or she will love you for it.
I saw some pint sized bowls in a pet store a friend of mine took me to the other day that made me extremely upset.

I can assure you it will be one male, otos, and cardinal tetras.

I also have seen sone shocking conditions bettas have been kept in jars so small they find it difficult to swim plus nothing but filthy water and some practically finless.

The LFS where I will be buying the Betta has them in large tanks with single specie fish only. One very beautiful male was in a four ft plant tank. All these tanks had a good clean water movement

I recently read an article published in 1977. That fighters were kept in small jars along side each other, to encourage them to keep their fins spread therefore enhancing colour and development. This practice was considered barbarous and should be deplored.

It went on to emphise that colour and finage are controlled by genetic and selective breding. This must also be coupled with the best living conditions and an ample amount of live food.

This article alone made me do it that way in providing the best I can do. My pre estiminated cost was about Aust$300-$400.

You really are going all out Keith. I know you said when you started this project that it was going to be quite a lengthy process, but I never did think to this level.

Looking forward to seeing your first photos when completed. Going to be quite the sight to see, I'm sure.

A little update. I just got a quote for the plants (I previously worked from shop prices) As I am buying a lot of plants and the LFS is ordering them in especially I will be getting them at a very good price.

While doing a little repair work to my two ceramic airstones I had to remove the 4 large Anubias in the 5ft tank. The main stems(for want of a better word) are all close to 18ins. I will be able to cut some up to place on my piece of DW I also found three medium sized Anubias as well. Perfect for what I want.

All this makes a cold wintery day a lot better.
