Can anyone explain the concept of this to me?
For some reason I can't grasp the concept of a sponge filter.

These are the materials I think are suppose to be used to create a sponge filter:
Airstone
Tube
Pump
Sponge

Am I thinking wrong? I am thinking that you cut a hole in foam slide the tube through, attach the airstone to the pump and put the airstone in the tube. But this seems wrong. Help please. =)

Hi,
Take a large, thick, sponge and cut a clean hole in it
deep enough to support the tube and tight enough to
hold the tube in place. Do not go all the way through
the sponge to the bottom, just aim for 3/4 through the
sponge.
Drill several holes around the sides of bottom part
of the tube below where the airstone will sit, at
the end that will fit into the sponge.

Then insert the assembly into the tank and have it
soak up enough water to settle to the bottom.
Insert the tubing and airstone down the tube
(there should be a slight gap between the
stone and tube)and then apply the air.
The longer the bubbles are confined to the tube as
they rise, the better the vacuum, and the better
the filter will work. (make the tube long enough
to nearly reach the surface.)

As the bubbles rise up the tube they push the water
in the tube ahead of them which forms a vacuum below
them. That vacuum, draws water through the sponge and
out into the tube where it too is pushed upward by
the bubbles, and more water rushes through the sponge
to take its place, and so on.
