I am an eheim user so dont say i should try before i criticize but it seems to me that these filters are abit overrated on this site.

Yes i admit they are a very good quality filter...but are they all they are hyped up to be?

I am an Eheim user and I will continue to support a very good product. Yes they do cost more but this can vary a lot depending where you buy it. It is the old saying you only get what you pay for.
Some of the copies if you have a very close look at the inner workings and the quality of the materials used and the workmanship there is no comparison.
As far as being God I think your questions do not ask a full balanced choice that is why I prefered to answer this way.
My Pro11 was bought long before it even came to Aust it was a special package release and as I ordered it that way the cost was well below normal retail. Remember there are taxes and profit margins added in this can make a big difference to the price even with LFS only a few klm appart.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Yeah, I just bought a 2028 and a 2029 for less than £100 each with the media included. You have to shop around.Gotta admit though having looked around there lately, ebay wouldnt be the best choice. Folks are getting a little silly about the resale price of the pro 2 's and earlier. Seen them go several years old without media for around £70-£100. Once youve bought the media you might as well have gone out and bought a new one complete with guarantee and media included, no disease risk, or wear and tear.

Dont pay more than £50 for a second hand one, not when you can still get new stock for cheap.

(1) - eheims arent as great as everyone believes, there are much better filters out there.

Probably not unless you go custom.

(1) - they may be god but they arent worth the price tag

In a way thats almost certainly true, but youre paying for a design, we all know apart from the motor filters are just plastic and paying a few hundred quid for one seems unreasonable. I'd rather have one with a good motor, and a practical design, and fork out for one filter when you might go through 3 others in the same period of ownership. Moral being, shop around, as above there are plenty of cheap ones around.

(2) - eheim = GOD

Well at the moment among the mass produced filters they probably are, but thats not to say you cant make do with something else. Some of it is individual taste, some of it is practicality and some of it is cost. Its not like they have a trade monopoly or anything, in fact rena and fluval probably outsell them 50 to one. Bit like cars, people make some bewildering choices, and choose some truly bad cars, indifferent cars, and others like reliable japanese and german motors. Maybe it comes down to taste as much as anything else. To me a filter is a filter, but some people regard them almost as friends and status symbols, other live to "big -up" the filters they have. Personally I just cant shake the idea that filters are basically life support systems and therefore I choose the most reliable filter I know of, and that to date, having tried quite a few makes in my time, just happens to be most eheim models. If they are superceded i'll move on, its just as yet, I dont think they have been.
