Just wondering if a tank is empty, does the silicone go hard & cause a problem. I have bought a 2nd hand ft tank, that previous owner said was empty for 2 weeks, it's now nearly been a week with me & still empty. There is work to do on the cabinet before I set it up. Should I be concerned about the sicilcone drying out. Should I put water in it, just to keep it supple, or as this just worry over nothing?

Wasn't sure where this thread should sit, but I'd appreciate advice.

Cheers

No silicone won't go bad because it's dry but it can get too old. Tanks left sitting dry for a year or 2 in storage can have the silicone crack especially if they kept out in a garage or storage shed instead of in a temp controlled environment. Silicone is left to cure for at least 24hours until it's completely dry. If it didn't dry and cure it would still be somewhat toxic to your fish.

I agree, your tank seals should be fine unless the tank was subjected to harsh conditions before with the person you got it from.

If you really want some peace of mind, find a flat, strong surface that you don't mind getting wet. Put some newspapers out, and put the tank on it. Fill 'er up and wait. Observe for any wet marks on the newspaper, indicating a leak. If it holds for a few days, you're good If not, the wet spot should at least give you a hint to where the break is.
