Hi Folks !

Any glass top experts here ? I have a couple questions.

My 40g tank (36x18) has no centre brace. I had to pass on a really nice glass top I could have bought used for $10. because of this. Same one in the store is $36. plus tax. They didn't have a top made for a 3ft tank with no centre brace. They are able to get one cut to my specs but they'd have to price it out once seeing the specs.

I could get a 1 or 2 piece top cut to spec but wouldn't have the nice flip up lids in front. I keep 2 double light strips on one piece of glass and a piece of plexiglass at the moment. It looks very shoddy to me. Plus it has open areas so water evaporates quickly.

It needs to hold the 2 light strips, have an open spot in the back for my hob filter, and a small flip up lid in the front left for feeding.

Is is possible to buy or make add a centre brace to a tank that does not have one ?

Thanks !

Thanks !

As long as the glass extends the entire 3ft, it doesn't need a center brace. Most 30G tanks are made without a center brace. Taller tanks, like my 38 do have center braces. However, the same glass lid, made by All Glass Aq. fit both tanks(my old 30, and the 38 I upgraded to).

In conclusion, if your tank is an AGA tank, buy an AGA glass lid, and it will be fine. Different manufacturers use different tank dimensions on purpose, so be careful with that. If the tank is off by 1/4" then you can be screwed.

Oh, and I know for a fact that AGA makes glass lids for their center braceless 40G tanks.

I was buying the plastic hinges and handles seperately and getting the acrylic sheets cut for my tank but I don't see them on www.drfostersmith.com anymore. They have some parts here: http://www.aquariumguys.com/glass-canopy.html but never ordered from them. It was much cheaper to get my own pieces cut than buy them from a local store. Just have to make sure they polish/smooth out the edges. I had my grandpa pick some up for me the first time cause he was going to get some other things made and like usual he cut corners to cut cost. I sliced my hand open 3 times on the edges before I got around to finishing the pieces myself.

Question. Why not? it is only 3ft in length and you should be able to reach both ends.

I have flaps on both tanks both are about 4ins in width,
Because the Betta tank is recessed I have a small piece of very thick glass glued on to act as a lifting point.

The glass you will have to buy must be at least 1/4ins, it is a stronger glass and far easer to use. Also make sure the glaziers take of all the sharp edges. Is the glass set in or is it to be overhanging? If it is set in you can glue on two grips mine are 2&1/2 X 2 X 3/8 and it works perfect as a grip.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
