Glasstop For 55 Gallon? Advice Needed... | |
Brian1216 Hobbyist Posts: 97 Votes: 0 Registered: 28-Apr-2005 | I'm looking to upgrade my lighting from a single strip to a triple tube fluorescent strip but was wondering what kind of glass canopy i would need to put it on. Drs. Foster and Smith has a glass Versatop for a double tube strip light but nothing for a triple. I have a 55 gallon with a center brace in the middle. Should i get (2) 24" double strip glass canopies or just 2 regular 24" glass canopies? Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. Is there any reason why you can not go to a glazier and get the glass cut to what ever you want. Regardless of size I would only but the thicker 5-6mm What I have for my 5ft is four pieces two wider so that the twin light unit can sit on and a narrow one at the front 5ins wide I can lift this for feeding and cleaning the front glass without removing all the glass. Also for the 45lt the front the front piece is 4ins wide. I hope this is what you are referring to. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3730+13818&;pcatid=13818 Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Funny thing, I just got 2 - 24" glass tops for one of my 55's tonight hehe. One thing that may be of concern, that triple tube light fixture, is that if its a CF, the heat build-up in the glass, then a fish does a little splash, the "cold" water + "hot" glass = a shattered mess...even with dock mounts for the fixture. Maybe see if your local hardware store sells small sheets of even mid-grade extruded acrylic sheets (NOT plexiglass or polycarbonate, these will "yellow" through time) or better yet, a local plastics supplier, usually they will have a remenant section where usually everything is like dirt cheap, and they may even cut it to size for ya !! Just be sure to give whomever accurate dimensioins Good luck !! J. |
