crusha Enthusiast Fish Geek Posts: 262 Kudos: 183 Votes: 102 Registered: 11-Nov-2005 | Hi, does anyone know what the "k" rating is on the Sylvania Gro-lux lighting tubes. When its switched on it gives off a pink glow. I cant seem to find this information on the packaging or the tube itself. Thanks for any info you can pass on. Cheers Crusha |

There is a link to e-mail them, so maybe you can inquire directly for your particular tube. http://sylvania.aquanet.de/English/dframset.htm Jim |

I was just interested because they are specific for plant growth (according to the tube wrapping) and from what I have learnt you need at least 6500k for plants. Thanks for your response. FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, Growlux bulbs are in the lower, red end of the spectrum and as you saw, they give off light with a pinkish tinge. Plants use the light in the red and blue ends of the spectrum. However, light in those portions tends to change how we see things, pinkish or bluish light tends to wash out colors. So, most of us use bulbs in the 6700-8800K range. If you are going to use a growlux bulb, first be sure it is meant for aquatic and not terrestrial use, and second, use two bulbs, one growlux and the other one that is labeled DAYLIGHT or SUNLIGHT. The plants will then get lots of light, and you will not see the pinkish tinge as much. Same way with bulbs at the other end of the spectrum 10,000K+. Most who use bulbs at that end of the spectrum run a mix of high K and mid K rating bulbs to get rid of the bluish tinge. Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

I purchased another tube of that "k" rating it was much, much brighter. I currently have 1 x 10,000 daylight and 1 x 6500. Tank looks much, much better. Just waiting to see what effect it has on my plants now. Cheers Denise |
