HOT pro carbon alternative | |
vwaudifreak Fingerling Posts: 16 Kudos: 16 Votes: 0 Registered: 27-Nov-2005 | I have a Marineland HOT pro (biowheel) with the huge carbon container. I would like to stop using carbon. What would you all suggest I put in the container? Filter floss? |

Otherwise the filter floss should work. Last edited by OldTimer at 15-Jan-2006 21:04 |

I would use a piece of sponge cut to fit in the enclosure. You simply drain the tank into a bucket while doing a water change, and squeeze the sponge out in the old tank water, and replace the sponge back into the filter. Nothing could be easier and the sponge will last years before many fall apart. Why mess with that stuff and throw it away after a week or two? Since you mentioned filter floss I would guess mechanical but there are other chemical medias. The problem with fitting something in the cannister section of the magnum is the shape and water flow. If yours is the same as the one I used to have(and cursed for months before throwing it in the trash) it's just a big empty cylinder in the middle that the water is suppose to flow through. Coarse filtering ceramic noodles would be easy to use, reuseable, and wouldn't cause water flow problems but your already filtering through a medium filtering material before it gets to that point so it wouldn't add much mechanical filtration and you have biowheels so it wouldn't be useful biomedia either. You could buy strips of filter material and cut it to size and either try to wrap it around the inside of the cylinder or lay down la |
