I have seen this type of marking in glass it is caused by water/moisture if it is that it is impossible to remove as it in the glass. Just in case it is not that try cleaning with a non scratch scouring pad. If it is a thick coating you should be able to feel it with your finger nail if it is that a razor blade will remove it.

I have one of these marks in my glass cover top and it can not be removed.

What could have caused that mark was the level of the water was always low and the tank light caused it to happen. Check with in inlaws about the water level.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

I've had a few tanks like that, and a razor blade and a good soaking with some vinegar seems to help. As keith said, you might not be able to be rid of all of it, but that should help. The vinegar is a weak acid and should soften up the deposits and make it easier for the razor to take it off.

I've done this a few times and it seems to work pretty well, but not 100%

I had the same problem with my 20g when I kept the water level low trying to breed blue gourami. Looks like its the salts and other minerals depositing on the glass when the water from splashes evaporates. Then I refilled the tank to full capacity and in a week, the whitish stuff was almost gone. For the insoluble carbonates and stuff, vinegar should do the trick!

I purposely dropped the water line in my 55g for breeding applesnails and got mineral deposits all along the top that vinegar and scraping wouldn't remove. I just kept the tank completely full for a month and it was gone.
