Anyone have any type of DIY or even have found a heater cover of some type that would help to protect fish from getting burned

I got to thinking about this after reading this post

http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/The%20Hospital/58140.html?200504150843

I might try and see what I can work up that would work. If I come up with something, I'll be sure to post photos and directions.

Jim

Yes Jim here in the UK we have these they cover the whole heater no gaps or holes for anything to sneek in they are very good much better that the ones that stick on the glass over the heater as i had several fish die through getting trapped in those.

This is the other type of guard that sticks to the glass over the heater please do not buy these they are death traps the fish can get in through the gap between the glass and heater and if un noticed will burn and die.

I found these heater covers but they are specific to a certain type of heater, so may not be a cure all for other heater types.

I was kind of curious why they don't add heaters to filters. I realize that inside it would cause bacteria growth but if you added it like where the bio wheel is on a penguin it would help distribute heated water better. I just don't understand how a heater can distribute the water evenly across the tank.

That was my thought,
Thanks,
Joshua

most heater guards are really for such fish like oscars. oscars are clumsy and "trip" over heaters constently. on top of that the stupid red light on a heater to show its on comes with a clicking noise when the heater turns on and off. this gets the attention of the oscar and instently becomes subject to " i wanna play " abuse. as you can imagin a 16 inch full grown oscar would have no trouble talking those weak suction cups into letting go of the glass. then the heater is systematicly tossed around sometimes even tossed UP breaking a glass top.

Some of the large Eheim Canisters have heaters installed.

I have never had a problem with heaters as far as fish burns. If I have I have never noticed it.
I have always kept the heaters in the corners of the tank.

Yes Keith I am lucky like that as my tank is the jewel rio400 and the heater is housed in the internal filter although I also have an external fluval 404 with a UV sterilizer attached running as well.
