I am thinking of setting up a 75 gal tank on the 2nd floor of my house. Do you think it would be safe or would it be too heavy?

I would just worry about something awful happening, and your tank cracks or sometihng, then you have a big mess if the water rushes out on a 2nd level.

Hi,
The general rule of thumb for the theoretical weight
of a filled tank is to figure 10pounds/gallon.
In other words, that 75 gallon tank should weigh about
750 gallons when full.

If you have the tank on one of those wooden furniture
cabinets made for aquariums, then the weight is
distributed across the width of the cabinet. Quite
the opposite if it is sitting on a wrought iron stand
or something similiar where the weight is sitting on
the four points that touch the floor.

Large tanks should be set against a "load bearing" wall,
and at right angles to the floor joists.

It's also a good idea to put a large piece of plywood (maybe 5 feet in each direction from the tank) under the stand. That will distribute the weight over a much larger area and cause less strain to the building.

Reinforcing the floor from the room below it will also help.

This is why I have all of my tanks in my basement...they also stay cooler in the summer
