Hi all,
Am new here so please help! Just got an order of 4 Discus (2" and had some two more in a quarantine tank that have been there for 2 weeks now. I was going to move the quarantine Discus to the main tank but I notice my filter magnum making like splashing noises and I also notice more particles in my water and on the surface, which makes it look like white. Oh no, now it not working. This filter is 7 years old now so, I know I need to get a new one. Which canister brand do you recommend which easy to clean? I need to get one ASAP as I need to move my Discus. They are all in the quarantine tank but, they fighting a lot.
Any info will be appreciated.

i have an older magnum 350 that needs a COMPLETE takedown and cleaning every 6 months or so. if i do not, the water flow diminishes dramatically. when was your last cleaning? any of the tubes cracked or warped? are there any large things stuck in the filter?

i strip mine down 100% in my bathtub. sometimes the impeller has strange stuff in it, which affects the water output. once in awhile, the unit is jammed with plant debris. if the seal is broken/ruptured, the unit will suck air into it, which will cause weird noises.

take it apart and see what you can find.

I have a 60 gallons tank. I took it apart when I clean it. Everything seem fine. I recently change the top rubber band because there dry out and broke. Any way it keep on making that splashing noise. Right now I turn it off and the particles seem to diminished a lot but the water still seem very cloudy. I never had this problem before. I also have install the biowheels but those are find. Am turning on again...... Here come those particles or debris. I don't what it really is but it make my tank look very dirty. Do I to full my MAGNUM 350 all way with carbon? I never did but may this could also be the problem.
Sorry for those? But am so worry right. Especially about my Discus also.

It sounds like the mechanical filtration in your Magnum has broken down.

If you want a cannister filter, you have a wide range of choices and price ranges. As an immediate solution, I would buy an Aqua Clear 300 to hang on the back of your tank. Keep this filter in place even if you decide to add a cannister. Two filters are always better than one!

If you totally cleaned the filter in chlorinated water, replaced the carbon and the filter floss, you no longer have a cycled filter - which would explain why your tank is cloudy.

Your Magnum will make "splashing" sounds within the canister if you have left a big pocket of air in there - turing the filter on and then off and then on again should get the water to siphon back into and fill the filter, drivign out the pocket of air - but it you have been running this filter for 7 years, surely you must know all the above!

If you did not clean the hoses, you may be seeing bits of biofilm floating about in the tank - but the filter should take those out over a few hours or so.

Is the filter working now or not? Is it making splashing noises or squeaky noises? If its been running for 7 years, my bet would be a worn impeller and impeller well. Mine sure never lasted any 7 years. I think you got your money's worth and then some from the filter.
