I have a 30 gallon tank that I have had for about 3 years. It came with a stand that was made for the tank. The stand looks like a cheap "formica" wood. It has shelves built into the left side of the stand and the right side has a hollow space for storage. It doesn't look like it gives it much support.

I have started to hear the tank "settle", or creak at night and I'm starting to worry. Should I try to give it extra support some how? I'm just worried that I will have 30 gallons of water on my bedroom floor one night.

thanks peeps

if it truly is made of particle board, then you will see the stand start to bend at the edges from the weight. it is possible to reinforce the stand, but that's best done without a tank sitting on top of it if you really like the stand you have now, then reinforcing it will be the cheapest method, but if you don't like it very much, then there's no reason to not get a new one

I agree with Moondog. A simple way to solve your problem is to just buy a new stand, but then again if you don't want to buy a new stand try and reinforce the old stand.

I'm using a cheap television stand for one of my 10 gallon tanks. All I did to reinforce it was cut some 2x4s and screwed them to the stand to make sure the weight would be held. It's a lot easier than have to move an already setup tank to a different stand.

scubaninja:

Water is the enemy of particleboard. Dry, it will last a good many years and is quite strong.
I'd suggest trying to determine what's actually groaning. Is it the stand or the floor?
If it will help you sleep at night, then I would not hesitate to buy a new stand. It's not worth the worry.
