I have my lights on for 12 hours a day. Generally anywhere around 12 hours should be fine, give or take.

i leave mine on from about 7am unil i go tobed at night, never had a problem with algae or anyhting.probably because the plants suck up all the nitrates.

turn mine on around 6:30 in the am and turn off about 9:00 or when i go to bed (can be later)... have some algae which could be controlled but i dont really want to spend the money on a timer when i could just buy more fish/plants/or tank stuff with the same funds.

My lights go from 11 AM to 9 PM, which is 10 hours. How long you want them on for doesn't matter unless you have plants; otherwise it's when you can just have them on for when you want to view the fish.

Generally from 7AM to 1AM.

I enjoy staying up late.
