The standard flourscent is a long tube with one or two electrical connections called "pins" at each end. They come in all sorts of lengths, and several different diameters ranging from 5/8 inch to an inch and a half. By changing the shape of the standard tube you are able to "compress" the amount of light given off into a smaller area. For instance, you can get flourscent tubes that will screw into the socket for an incandescent bulb in a small aquarium hood and double or even tripple the light in the tank. Compact flourscent bulbs are generally horseshoe, or "U" shaped lights with electrical connections (pins) at one end. The pins come in two different configurations. Either four pins in a straight line, or four pins in a square configuration. It takes a special socket for these bulbs and they usually require a cooling fan as well. If you have a standard hood, and want increased light, you might consider getting a bulb that is rated as SUNLIGHT, or DAYLIGHT rather than a "grow" type of bulb. Do not purchase a "Warm" bulb (labeled warm white, etc.) The "Warm" series are designed for reading, while the DAYLIGHT or SUNLIGHT include the "glare" of direct sunlight and are rated at about 6700K temperature.. Perfect for plants. Hope that helps... Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |
