I'm going to start using peat in one of my tanks and need to purchase media bags. What is the 'micron' number mean? I'm shopping at BigAl's online and both a 250 and 800 micron are available without a big difference in cost.

Thanks

'micron' number means the mesh of the bag. Openings per square inch. Like fabric the use points per square inch.

Hi,
When using peat in a tank, as I recall it comes in shreds
with some powder and even twigs. The media bag should be
large enough to allow water to flow through it, but at the
same time you would not want the very fine powder to get
loose in the tank where it could clog the tank's filter or
create "muddy water."

Here is a site that may help:

Depending on your filter system, you may want to go with
the smaller mesh and place it in the "input" side of the
filter.
