My air pump is quite noisy. Any suggestions on how to quiet it. I thought about buying a piece of thick foam at a craft store and cutting out a piece, drop in the pump and put the cut out piece back on top. Not sure if the pump gets hot enough that it may burn. Are there any really quiet models on the market. Thanks.

Hang it from string inside your stand, that way there will be nothing for it to rattle on. If it's just plain noisy, you're gonna have to deal with it on a piece of foam, as encasing it in something will cause lack of the needed air movement, and you will create a fire hazard.

Try hanging it or else place it on a piece of foam.

Never heard the haning from a string one before... t'anks fallout....

and old mousepads work great for reducing the vibrations...I'm sure you probably have an extra one or two lying around somewhere .... maybe it's just me .

Hi,
IF the noise is from the vibration, then the suggestions
are great. I used to set mine on a piece of foam.
Never thought to suspend it on a piece of string.

However, if it is a rattle clack sound then the problem
is internal and one caused by too much back pressure.
Either add another line and airstone, or stick a gang
valve in the line and then take about an 8 inch piece
of hose and slide a pipe cleaner into it then connect
it to an unused valve and crack the valve open.
You then adjust that valve open or closed till the
noise disappears and the airstones still work as you
want.

I found that my pump got noisy when the airline wasn't attached to the pump really well. I'd often get it to be quite a bit more quiet by snipping off the end of the airline and reattaching it to the pump. Still, I'm happy I'm not running one right now, because it was the most noisy piece of aquarium equipment I've run across.

As for quiet brands, I've only used one, so I'm not in a position to comment. I've heard that Rena makes quiet pumps, but you could check here for more information on different makes: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/reviews/category_display.php?CatID=801.

You will also find that if the pumps diaphram (sp?) is split this can cause a lot of noise.

You can buy new ones and replace it, but pumps are fairly cheap anyway and it may be just as easy to replace it.

Just a suggestion, as it could also be rattling as mentioned above.

our airpump was pretty noisy. acually, it is sitting behind the stand on the carpet, and you can hardly hear it.

I've hung mine from a string to reduce noise, and the mousepad idea sounds like it'd be good too, I gotta remember to try that. I have a rena air pump and it is dead silent, I can't even tell when it turns on and off its so quiet. My noisy pump is some older brand, and I find sometimes things just click out of place so if you kinda jiggle and push it around it usually stops. Good Luck
