I recently stopped using a heater in my tank (10 gallon), because the thermometer shows nearly 80f !!

How could that be? Well as the temperature outside the tank increases, so does the tank temp. Is it hot out?

In a 10 gallon tank the temperature can fluctuate fairly quickly, so it 's better to just leave the heater in the tank and leave the setting the same. If the water is warm enough, the heater just won't turn on. There is no harm leaving a properly working heater in a hot tank.

I would leave the heater, but I can't adjust the temperature...
I want it to be 76f.but it's above 80f. if I put the heater it won't get any colder...

Can your turn the heater down or is it already at its lowest? If you are experiencing warm weather then the water will heat up quickly in a 10g. At the same time, if the temperature drops in the evening then you will find that the tank temp will too so having a heater in the tank will maintain it.

the heater was in its minimum level before I turned it off.

the temp isn't getting colder in the evening, or late at night. it's always above 80.
I checked the therometer, and it's working fine.

what do I do?

First of all, taking the heater out isn't a good idea. The temp will eventually go down and if you forget to put the heater back in, you'll get cold fish and disease. To help in cooling, you can place a fan near the top of the tank to blow air over it. This will help keep the tank temperature down. Having the temp at 80 isn't a bad thing though unless you have cold water fish that can't handle the higher temps. Turning the lights off during the hottest part of the day can also help since the lights do generate some heat as well.

not a fan, the AIRCONDITIONER is working in that room, and the temperature underwater still is above 80.

I'm afraid of heating my fish, I mean it's already too hot right now, if I turn on the heater it will be very hot

I thought heaters turned off by themselves once the water was hot enough. What temperature is the airconditioner set at? If there's no heater, the tank should be at the same temperature as the room. Maybe you need a smaller heater so it doesn't make the water too hot, but will still stop it getting too cold at night.

Does your tank heater have preset temperatures you can set it to? If so, when the water reaches that temperature it will turn off. The problem seems to be though that the room temperature is high.
Can you aim a fan at the surface of the water? Doing this will help the temperature of the tank.
Take the cover glass off, switch the light off and make some more surface agitation aswell, either with a airpump/bubbler.
There isnt much more you can do if the outside environment is hot and uncontrolable except hope the fish will be okay.

Then get a new heater that enables you to set a temperature. The kind that just plug in and are "on" and have no setting are just broiled fish waiting to happen. You need to be able to run a certain temperature for certain fish, and to increase that temperature when treating for various illness/sickness . A titanium heater would not be too obtrusive in a 10 gallon. http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=22417;category_id=3231;pcid1=;pcid2=

My daughters tank has the same problem trouper. Its in her bedroom which is where the hot water tank is also housed so her room is always very warm. I have found if I keep her curtains closed open all the windows and run a fan in there all day its fine it stays at around 80 which the fish don't seem to mind but I do keep the heater in there though to maintain the tank at the same temp 80 al the time as the fish do not like temp drops or rises so since the fish are happy at 80 I try to keep it there cos if I don't it rises and falls to much and then that's where the problems start. So I guess what i am saying is if your fish are happy with a temp of 80 try to maintain it at that by means of cooling in the day and heating with the heater at night.

Well, if the room is air conditioned, then the water is being heated by something! How much light do you have on the tank? What type of lights are they and how long are they on? That would be the first place I would look. If you have an incandescent hood, this is most likely the cause. I would also verify that the temperature is as you believe it to be. If you have a stick on aquarium thermometer, it may be wrong. I would double check the temperature with a good thermometer. If the temp is actually that high (and 80 deg isn't really a problem for most tropical fish) then look for what could be heating it. Also, a broken heater can cause this as well, but as you posted, you removed it already.

Oh yes that's another thing I do with my daughters tank it has a lid with built in light so I leave the hatch open and my husband has cut bigger openings in the back of the lid where the wires all go into the tank this has allowed more air to circulate
