When used with a protein skimmer in a saltwater tank it will improve its efficiency and provide other benefits such as sterilization similar to that of a UV system. Here is a link to some FAQs about filters in which ozone is mentioned. http://www.faqs.org/faqs/aquaria/general-faq/filter/ When I searched on "ozone used in freshwater aquariums" I came up with pages of reading.
