My six stage RO/DI unit that filters 100g/pd leaves my water 100% pure, It should do so for ANY water. The only thing that you will see that is differnt from one place to the other is the speed in which the filters get depleated. The harder the water the faster your media will be depleated.

A very good RO/DI system will soften your water so that you have almost zero hardness. However, you should not use just the RO/DI water for your discus. It should be mixed with your well water to provide some hardness for the fish.

Juvenile fish grow best in hard water. The minerals are great for adding muscle and bone. In fact, juveniles grown exclusively in RO/DI water will be stunted and deformed if they survive the process.

Depending on your hardness, you may only need RO/DI water to breed discus. Excess hardness prevents egg fertilization. Once eggs have been fertilized and the wigglers have found the parents, I strongly discourage the use of soft water (under 3 dKH).

if you do use ro water, as stated above it shouldn't be used alone, except to top off your tank. As water evaporates, it will leave behind minerals. When you add ro water, it will not add any more making for a more consistient condition.

I used distilled water exclusively for my killifish tank, but you've got to use a reclaim chemistry such as Kent Ro Right. This will let you add just the right amount of minerals and electrolytes back to the water for your fish.
