Hello again! I think I'm probably going to get the 50g tank from the pawn shop (that I talked about in an earlier post) simply because where I live, the cheapest 50g glass tank (new) is $250 canadian and the Aquaclear 300 (that's included in the old 50g) is $60 new!(and that doesn't include the lights, hood, gravel, plants, fish etc.) If I do buy the old tank I'll get it resealed by my LFS for $30. Is that a good deal? I want to get it done by my LFS because I've never resealed a tank before and it would be a BIG deal if it exploded in my living room.

Thanks!

P.S. Wow! I used a LOT of brackets:%)!!!

Where are you in canada? i was just in vancouver and i found some amazing deals on fish tanks and filters. And i'de say yes, so long as the person at the LFS doing it is experienced, and has resealed a whole lot of tanks before. I mean its something you could do yourself, yes, but if you don't feel comfortable doing it, than $30 isn't all that much compared to the total cost of a 50 gal set-up.

I live in a small city in the southeast corner of BC, quite close to Calgary. What sort of bargains did you find?

king ed's pet center in van. had a weekend special when i was there- all 75 gal. tanks (tank only, no hood, stand, etc.) for $120. They also have 180 gal. tanks on at $350 all the time, and a great price on the plant substrate stuff ($20 per 20 lbs bag) Besides that, everything was cheaper too; AQ500's were $40 or so, high watt lighting systems were about 30% less than normal, and so on. It looks like they're buying direct from factory or something, because its all much less than what i've found at your average LFS.

I have said it before I would never repair an old tank too many reasons and it will work out in the long term.

I resealed one of my tanks and its been up and running for about 3 years and i've had absolutley no problems with it. You just have to make sure you use a silicon caulk. nothing but silicon. It stink so put it outside when you do it and let it sit for at least 3 days empty, then fill i with water, let the outside dry ( 2 days) then you can see if it leaks and where so you can finish resealing it

dragon, if you live close to Calgary you should check out Big AL's in Calgary, they have reasonable prices, probably a lot better then the other lfs there, Also check Big Al's online for the filter.

resealing a tank is never a great idea unless you completely take out the entire glass section. If you just plug the leak with some silicone you have a good chance that the plug will not attach to the old silicone as good as it should due to dirt, grease, etc. Also, if it is an old tank, check out whether there are any scratches on the glass. Glaas gets most of it's strength from surface tension, scratches break this tension and weaken the integrity of a glass panel tremendously, making it very vulnerable to breaking (that's basically how glass cutting works). Moving tanks with scratched glass is therefore always a very bad idea, I'd say, buy a new tank instead, don't take any risks with such big tanks

Thank you very much for your input! I'm still thinking about what to do with tanks (I used to be indecisive, but know I'm not sure). Right know I'm just checking out prices on the net and considering my options.

Thanks Again
