As the topic. I've heard a lot about the good mechanical filtration of canisters, but when I actually do have a lot of particulate matter in the tank (i.e. putting in a plant), it seems to just flow in circles rather than getting sucked up by the filter.

55g, Eheim 2026. I've got the intake on the right side of the tank, at mid-depth. The outflow goes to the upper-left corner, in a wide flow across the surface from what I assume is a spray bar (long tube, eight small holes in a line).

Am I just expecting too much? Should I be happy if the water is generally clear unless I actually disturb something?

as longs as the water is crystal clear, it's doing its job
why don't you pick the visible particles your self instead
even if the filter sucks it in, you will still have to clean you filter anyway

I have the same filter. My inlet is very close to the bottom back LH corner and the spray bar oposite end across the surface. My filter came as a package and the outlet has a directional control see photo. I took this during a water change to show the outlet directional flow

I also have two risers from my UG filter and they are directed towards the inlet end.

I often have to pick off surface bits and pieces but this in usually towards the front LH corner and very easy to net out.

Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.
