If you're using any valves you can try full open or just add more outlet avenues (more airstones I guess). I haven't been at this long but I this is my observation. |

It was vibrating so much it was wearing the rubber feet right off. I have a Rena on order! I hope it gets here soon!! Thanks for all the replies! Last edited by NeptunesLady at 12-Jun-2005 17:09 |

Many air pumps simply do not want to be valved down, it creates back pressure and really makes it loud. I found the solution to this is simply ising the smallest air pump I could, the rena 10 designed for 5-10 gal tanks. provides more than enuff air and is very quiet. |

Darth Vader Big Fish Posts: 338 Kudos: 334 Votes: 35 Registered: 05-May-2005 | i THINK:%) the larger AQUA ONE models are reasonably quiet cause my friend has one of them and i couldn't find the pump is was so quiet as it turns out it was just sitting on the shelf right behind the tank Declan |

kitten Fish Guru Meow? Posts: 2266 Kudos: 2194 Votes: 19 Registered: 18-Nov-2003 | The trick to this whole thing is... the sounds will decrease IMMENSELY over a month or so. Everything just needs to wear itself in. I got a Rena, also expecting it to be silent, but it wasn't until it had run for a while. I have an old air pump on my ten gallon (not sure what it is offhand, but they're not sold anymore), and it's silent... of course, the thing was secondhand and had run for years prior to my ownership of it. Take a facecloth, fold it into quarters and place the pump on top of that. Or put it on carpet. Or both. Now, the only time when my air pumps make noise is when I bump them out of place and they start to vibrate... against each other, cords or tubing, whatever it might be. Otherwise, just a very faint hum... the type of sound that you don't really notice until you turn the pump off and hear the absence of the sound. Last edited by Kitten at 05-Jun-2005 23:29 ~Meow. poisonwaffle Mega Fish Posts: 1397 Kudos: 591 Registered: 11-Feb-2003 | Would be much appreciated, Frank! She plugged it in when I was on the phone with her, and it sounded like the diaphragam was broken or punctured because it was making some really loud noises. I figure I'd be able to replace that part...I've done it in other air pumps, shouldn't be too hard to do it on this one... If I run into any problems or have trouble finding parts or something, I'll shoot ya a PM. Thanks |

NeptunesLady Hobbyist Posts: 71 Kudos: 197 Votes: 64 Registered: 29-May-2004 | Is there such a thing as a SILENT air pump??? I need one for a tank in the bedroom.... the one we have is driving us nuts with humming sounds. I looked online at Big Al's they seem to think the Rena Airs are silent. Is this true? If anyone has experience with a SILENT air pump please let me know ASAP:%) Thanks! |

Sharpix Enthusiast Posts: 241 Kudos: 123 Votes: 0 Registered: 01-Mar-2003 | AS for the 404's bubbling, the filter should NOT bubble at all. It might be either catching bubbles through the intake or the hoses are not tightly attached, or the filter is not well seat on the canister, or its getting bubbles through the Aquastop valves. Use some kind of lubricant in the o'ring seal, such as a light rub of vaseline along the canister seating surface where the o'ring rests, or a drop or two of cooking oil rubbed with one finger. Its a good measure to prevent cracked canisters... the o'ring tends to get 'grabby' when its not lubricated. Everytime you open it, you can do this. BTW, what size is your tank? |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, The "Silent Giant" air pumps were all the rage, way back when. I worked in a LFS and one of my jobs was to repair them. If yours does not work, I'll be glad to assist you, long distance, with instructions. When I was using air pumps, I finally gave up and put the pump in a closet and ran the hose through a hole in the wall at the ba truly quiet pump. divertran Fish Addict Posts: 784 Kudos: 469 Votes: 165 Registered: 14-Nov-2004 | Don't know about the rena. No, wait, I'm running two of them now (doh!). They are very quiet, although ime any sound from them usually comes from the hose vibrating against the wall or the cord. Keep them separated. I also have one of them resting on a mouse pad, the other is on a carpeted floor, and aside from the bubbles I have to look to make sure they're even on. houston Fish Guru You want what when? Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | Try this, I know our special ed class had a pump that simply drove them batty, yet I never noticed itgo figure so many running in my house I only notice when they quit running Put the airpump in a thick sock, or two...place it in a drawer, or both...it will deaden the sound quite a lot if not totally... best of luck, heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom."
