Thanks for all the replies! Yes, I do have a Fluval 404, however, I am using the air pump for the air stone... and it's soooo loud! Maybe I will try the rena's!!! Thanks!!! Also, I have noticed the fluval does have quite a current associated with it. Every 10 minutes or so I get a bunch of bubbles coming out of it too. Is this normal? Or do I have some trapped air? (Just got the fluval last Monday the 23rd, YIPPEE!)

I've become a big fan of the rena air pumps. I have the huge 400 (702E) pumps running bubble stones/wands in 3 different tanks, and it's still not loud enough to be disruptive.

I'm also a big fan of the fluval filters, and power filters in general. The only downside is that they tend to create quite a current, which is problematic for some fish, but for quality of filtration and ease of use, they're really great, and come in sizes suitable for just about any tank.

I found the Tom STELLAR to be pretty good, especially when dangled in an onion bag to reduce vibrations.

Also like the heavy duty SERA pumps.

Have you considered swapping to a power filter instead of an air-driven one? The Fluval internals are whisper quiet.

After numerous years in the hobby, I have never found a truly silent air pump. The closest that I every had was a brand called "Silent Giant" which was rather large and heavy as it had a large case filled with material to deaden the sound of the pump itself. I don't even believe these are available any longer.

This may not be possible in your case, but I have been known to place the pump in an adjacent room and run the airline through a small hole in the wall.
