Hi,
You might try looking at this site:
[link=http://www.garf.org/tank/buildtank.asp]http://www.garf.org/tank/buildtank.asp" style="COLOR: #FF00FF[/link]

Simply type in the dimensions, and hit enter. It will
give you all the materials needed and step by step
instructions for both the tank and the stand.

If you are using all glass, the information will still
give you insight on your task..
Frank

A frame and bracing would be the best option for a tank that size, for increased stability and less bowing out and chance of breakage.

About the wooden hood:

I built a hood for my 30 gal. using Oak. (I wanted to pack 4 24" bulbs under one hood )

I used 3 or 4 light coats of varnish, and I lined the inside with tin foil (poor man's reflector). But, I also cut two pieces of glass to cover the whole tank. I'm sure the glass protects the wood more than the varnish does.

It's only been two years, but everything seems to be holding up fine.
