I have a school of small white clouds (they're about 3/4" long) and a few of them have been getting sucked up into my Aquaclear 500. I imagine this will be less of a problem as they grow a bit more, but in the meantime, what could I do to make it more difficult for them to get in there. It's happened a few times, mostly with no long-term effects, but I've actually had one death due to this . I'm looking for some kind of sponge I could put over the intake, but I want to do it without impeding the water flow too much. Any suggestions?

You can try putting a piece of panty hose over the filter intake so they cant get sucked up. Or reduce the flow until they get a little bigger. Good Luck

I agree with FerretFanatic panti hose is excellent.
All you will have to do is remove it regually to clean it otherwise your filter might not work to its best.

Remember turn the filter off while cleaning/replacing panti hose.
Have several made up and it should only take a few minutes to replace rather than remove, wash, then replace.

Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.

http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/filter%2cmax/Class//T1/F29+0558+0011/Itemdy00.aspx will even fit on an ac mini. It's easily taken apart for cleaning. Panty hose and a rubber band, cutting a block of sponge, etc all work, but , for me, this looks a bit better.

Make sure that it's that they're being sucked into the filter...After I had covered the intake on my AC mini I still found a danio in the filter....he had jumped up the outflow somehow after I had filled the tank just a little full :%).

No, they're definitely getting sucked up. I found them underneath the sponge. I'll try the pantyhose idea and see if that works. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
