You really should have a cannister on anything about 80 gallons and above though. Some power filters are rated above that, but it would be cutting it close. You should try to get a filter rated close to double the tank size. |

A lot of people use two emperor 400s on a 125 that I know of, and it works out well for them. You can always double up like that. Cannisters are nice though, and can be used on smaller tanks like 29s or 30s maybe smaller. Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |

Within the next few months I'll be adding another. I considered a canister but I've been very happy with the AC so I'll stick with that. There are other things to consider other than gallons. What's stocked of the tank, and not just numbers of fish or inches. The waste put out by a large cichlid and that put out by a school of neons varies greatly, even if they're equal in inches. Frequency of water changes should be taken into account as well. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Going by that there seems to be no low figure just an "up to". If there was a suitable one for my Betta tank I would certainly use it but the out put would be too strong there fore I have to use an internal with a directional flow which also adds extra air. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. It is true that you don't have to have a cannister on anything. I was thinking more about convenience and efficiency though. I think it would be more convenient to have a cannister on tanks over 100g just because you could only use one. I don't know anything about emporer filters, so I didn't know they could be used for larger tanks. Guess I should've done more research before jumping in. I personally would love to have a cannister filter on all my tanks...if I could afford it. I love mine. Its so much quieter than my AC filters. No dripping noise at all./:' |

All thosetanks have more then one filter if it's rated for it or higher. Everything works well. I just recently picked up at my LFS Fluvals discontinued line of canister filters....101 204 304 and so on. I bought 6 filters for $300! Since they discontinued them my LFS had a sale on top of the reduced price as well! Can't wait to hook them up as well If it holds water and it's glass I want it! |
