My 40 gal german ram tank has a leak darnit !
Just when things were set up nice for a month.. The front panel was replaced at sometime and the patch job shabby. I think it was a 'speed repair'.

Luckily I have an empty 29 here and haven't delivered it to my friend yet.

I think these are the steps ?

1. Water from tank A (leaking) into tank B, along with the fish, plants, filter, heater.

2. flourite into a bucket with water from tank A, run an airstone to keep bacteria going.

3. Let tank dry, and clean area to be sealed with rubbing alcohol, let dry. Then silicone and let cure 24 hours.

4. Set everything back up and be mad as the crypts melt yet again !

Does this look ideal ? Should I re-seal the whole tank while I'm doing this or just around the front panel ? The plywood under the tank is only wet in the front left corner.

Thanks

remove the old silicone from the area u htink is leaking, add silicone, let it cure, and take out side or in an area where leaks wont affect too much.....place tank on newspaper and start filling 1 gallon at a time i think leave it for like an hour..maybe a half hour...and then either fill till u see a leak, or fill all the way....leave for the night...if no leaks then empty, place back on stand and enjoy

Sorry to hear about your tank I have had two in two years and one was a new tank.

The new tank went back to the maker and he just tossed into the rubbish bin.

Tanks are never worth repairing no matter how old they are. No good tank maker will gurantee it will not leak again (as you just found out)

There are many technical reasons, why basically it is to do with the glass being old (even in a tank one month in use) the water has affected the glass and it will not ahear as it should.

Many will say his is wrong but I am quoting the glaziers and tank makers. For some reason they should know as it is their trade and living.

Thanks for the advice both of you.

I'd buy a new 40 gal breeder, for $100. tax included,
but I have some car repair / tuneup / winterize expenses coming which will be at least $500.-$800.
So moneywise things are very tight right now.

I think I have to try to repair it

haha i hear you on the car troubles as im having them right now as well.

The steps you wrote seem as though they will work well enough, though you may want to test it for leaks overnight as suggested by fishyhelp. and i would say only repair that part, you know the saying if it's not broke dont fix it? yeah well you dont want your tank being damaged more than it is right

but then i would also say it may be a good idea as soon as you have some moolah to replace the tank...and dont go selling the old one to some poor sucker

best of luck to you!

Update

Completely drained then cleaned inside of the tank, glued on Sunday. Tonight filled it, right to the top, nothing in it yet, leak testing and it sits like this until tomorrow night. The wood under the tank is dry (KNOCK ON WOOD)

Thanks for all your helps and tips. I'll edit this with update tomorrow night in case anyone is interested.

Just give it a bit more time, to be 100% sure & then you can start again. Goodluck

Thanks Jasonpisani, discovered a pin leak in the top right front. Draining again and waiting to dry, looks like the weekend now for all the stuff to go back in... UNLESS... CRAZY GLUE ?
