I don't know if this is the right place to put this topic, so feel free to move it as needed.
I wanted to get some new lights for my 55 gallon and was wondering what would be some good lights would be. I don't have any live plants and have no intentions on getting any, so that isn't a concern, but I do want lights that will make my fish show up better in the tank. The lights I have now are not bright enough at all. TIA for any and all help.
Jen

Hi,
From the sound of things, you essentially want the light
on when you are there and looking at the fish, and off
when not around. Also from your comment, it sounds like
you might have a "dim" flourscent bulb.

I suggest you try going to the nearest hardware store,
like Home Depot, or Lowes and purchase a replacement
bulb that is marked DAYLIGHT or SUNLIGHT on the package.

This will give you a "brighter" light and should make
things easier to see in the tank.
As an asside, bulbs specifically for the aquarium
industry are generally kinda dim or yellowish looking.
Also, aging flourscent bulbs or corroded sockets can
contribute to a dim bulb as well.

I agree exactly with frank. The used tank I bought came with a color bulb....looked horrid and purple and very dim. Since I had plans on going with a lightly planted tank anyway I did a bit of research into the different color of bulbs.
End result was that as was said the "daylight" bulbs from Home Depot ended up looking the clear and bright. I'm using Phillips (I believe) the ones with the green foil around the ends... The can be found on the lower shelves in the lighting department of home depot...unfortunatly Lowes doesnt seem to carry them .
