Okay, we have a 55g with 2 penguin 125 biowheel HOB and we have been reading more and more about canister filters. Would it be best to have 1 canister and keep one of our existing filters above running? I do still want to have 2 filters, just in case one dies then you have a backup running. I am also wondering if our existing filters are even doing a good enough job? Is 4x per hour enough?? And just because I am sure everyone will ask, the stock is as follows:
1 gold gourami
2 blue dwarf gouramis
4 adult platies (~7 half-grown fry?)
5 harlequin rasboras
4 albino cories
2 peppered cories

(I have just added platy fry from another tank, so I cannot fill out the rasboras... I know they'd be happier with 8 and that is next on my list to add)

Hi,
Thats quite a fish load there. Personally, I would
check the water first for nitrate levels, and then -
maybe - add another filter.

Personally, I cannot see "tacking on" additional
filters with their expense, and additional cleaning
on a whim. Usually, it is far cheaper not to over
stock the tank. But thats from a person who has
7 small tetras in a 29 gallon jungle.

No, I was not suggesting adding a canister as a third filter but instead replacing one of my HOB's with the canister. I have never used a canister and wanted to know what other ppl are doing for filtration on their 55g tanks. Our water tests have all been perfectly fine, with no noticable levels of nitrAte... although this is not a surprise as all 3 of our tanks are heavily planted. So, really I just want to replace a HOB with a canister... partly because this tank is in my living room and a canister would cut down on the noise. Can anyone out there recommend a particular canister for me?

Thanks,
Beth
