yes, but if you use it without gravel, it does absolutly nothing to filter your tank.

Hi,
By very thin, keep the layer at least an inch to a half
inch thick. The bacteria that makes a UGF work, thrives
in the upper layer of the gravel.

FRANK, why do they recommend 2-3 inches or so with UGF's if it lives on the top layer? Or, does it really live throughout? If oxygenated water is being pulled through the gravel, it would seem it is all throughout.

But, I too have wondered just how low you can go.

hi,
The recommendations for 2-3 inches of substrate are for the
plants that are normally in the tanks. Generally speaking,
a planted tank should actually have 3 to 4 inches of
substrate. Two is considered a minimum for plants for find
good anchorage, and development of a healthy root system.

This thread seems to be asking for the minimum for a UGF
to function in. That would be around a 1/2 inch to an inch.

beneficial bacteria is in all layers in the gravel, not just the top.

If you dont have a UGF, then it is just at the top.
