Sharpix,

Yeah, I also would appreciate if you could elaborate your statement about the All-Glass stands a little.

Where and what did you hear about it? Or did it even happen to you? Somehow, I was under the impression that All-Glass is taking great pride in their products, up to the point of replacements with little to no hassle.

Thanks for your reply,

All glass stands are just trouble waiting to happen.

I suggest going metal frame then you can build the wood over it without even worrying at all.

I got the aquarium fundamentals stand and one of the guys that does maintenance for my mom's apartments helped me reinforce it some with metal bars. It's got an extra metal frame all around the top and bottom edges with bars going down the corners. Then there's a strip going lengthwise across the underside of the top and across the metal bracket it came with that's suppose to hold the 2 top pieces together. Basically instead of building wood over a metal frame we built a metal frame into the wood stand. All the metal parts were free scraps from I'm not sure where... He tends to come across things like that.

I also added an oak top and reinforced the supports on my 55g all-glass stand because I'm hoping to do a saltwater tank with lots of live rock when I finish the 90g and get a bit more money set aside. I just don't think all-glass stands look that sturdy and the guy at the lfs that does saltwater agreed with me. He even told me to go buy or build a different stand instead of buying the all-glass ones they sell.

SHAM, LOOK AT THIS:

55g tank, but the stand is made for a 90g (4'x 1.6' and 2' tall that I'll build later)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v502/Sharpix/AquaStand/AquariumStand1.jpg

It has polyester enamel (it handles better water than the regular enamel) and its built over a metaL frame. The only thich wood its at the top, the other sides sit and are held on the metal frame.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v502/Sharpix/AquaStand/AquariumStand2.jpg

I just throw the money, it was not expensive but im in Mexico.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v502/Sharpix/AquaStand/AquariumStand3.jpg

A photo of the inside tube frame. Its very very strong. I even step in it FREQUENTLY, with the 55g filled. the inside might look bad, but in fact the trays and the inner parts of the wood are as great looking as the outside. The tubes are painted black.

The metal frame was like $50 but was only the cost because the owner is my friend. The wood furniture covering was about $300, all in Mexico.

I wanted it to be done as nice as possible planning to replace the 55g for a 90g.

I put hinges on for doors & inside attached a 4way extention lead so that you only have one plug protuding from the unit!

Using mdf & a router (sp?) you can make it look quite nice. varnish it up & then put it in place around the frame.

I went through the phone book and asked people and I can promise I've seen every store in the area. The cheapest 90g stand I found was $300. There are some really expensive ones out there but that's not what I'm looking for. I want the cheapest stand that will not break and I don't have to build myself so I decided to look online. I have to get all my aquarium supplies online because the local stores are 4 times more expensive. There's 1 at bigals for $132 shipping included [link=http://bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=31182;category_id=2167;pcid1=2253;pcid2=]http://bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=31182;category_id=2167;pcid1=2253;pcid2=" style="COLOR: #00C0C0[/link] and 1 at foster and smith for $161 [link=http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=9881&N=2004+113764]http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=9881&N=2004+113764" style="COLOR: #00C0C0[/link]. Is the $30 more worth it and are these stands good quality since I can't actually see them myself?

I have to admit I cheat with my 130g & 33g...I brought steel frames (very sturdy) & then made cheep but nice looking cabinets around them...I could use MDF & plywood etc as the weight was already beening taken by the metal stand & this was just a 'disguise'

Sham,

Talk to your local cabinet maker and have him build one to your specifications. That way, you get the quality that you want at the price that you want. Well, if you don't like the price, you can always go back online...

Note that most cabinetmakers will overbuild the stand beacause of the water weight forgetting that the weight is displaced over the entire frame.

The same all glass stands for $380 at petland are online for $130-$150 but I didn't like those at all and it won't tell me shipping cost. If only people would fill out reviews online for stands this would be much easier.

Kind of a silly qusetion but is a iron stand stronger than a wood one, all the ones ive seen are kind of wobbly.

I haven't seen any metal stands. Only low quality wood ones and way too expensive ones. The $200 one the guy working there said he wouldn't buy for himself. Then there's the $600-$800 ones at another store which of course are good enough quality but a bit beyond my budget. A $300 metal stand would be great if it existed.

Locally stands I find online for $100 are going for $200-$300. Just like a fluval 304 is up around $200. Even with shipping stuff doesn't come out near the price of buying it locally and I have a 10% off card for the nearest store. The only reason I don't get an aquarium online is they have to ship it freight and fragile so I'm looking at $500-$2000 freight cost. $250 is the cheapest 90g aquarium that is still a good enough glass quality.
