Boi,

You can use virtually any of the bio media that is available whether it's packaged by Eheim, Marineland or Hagen. You can also stuff a second sponge in the AC instead of the bio material or carbon. The seeded sponge will have a tremendous amount of bio load once it is seeded and will give you a second stage of mechanical filtration.

Not really a need for bio additives after a tank has been cycled...@least not on a perpetual basis. I can see adding some NIC every few months to help support the colony.

I just run two sponges in my AC's squeezing out one in used tank water during water changes.

Babel, Bio is talking about a filter media not additives

I use this in my ac filters

I was a little doubtful about how much better the bio-max ring where than the foam for biological filter. Before running in it a 29 tank where it was slighty overstocked, plenty of filtration 10x, I would see seldom, very slight nitrite reading, and after nothing. I had been running extra foam which was replaced by the rings.

Sorry I was thinking of zeocarb dunno how :%).

There are some that swear by the beads, but essentially they're the same as the foam, simply a place for the bacteria to form a colony so they're not something that'll need replaceing.

yeah you guys kinda confused me for a while. i read that it made biological 3-10 times beter. i was planning on having a layer of foam then bio max then foam again, is that possible with AC 200. what are bio max made of and how long do they last.

Unless you cut the foam in half you won't really be able to do it with a 200, or any of them really . ACs only take two layers of media. So if you were to cut some of the height off of the foam blocks you'd have the additional space for the bio max rings. I think, somone that has them can clarify this of course , that they're made from a ceramic and should last for quite awhile.

There is no need for two foam and the cermanic rings. I would leave some space for the possible future addition of carbon though. The cermanic ring need changing at most once per year, but usually longer than that and hardly need the rinsing as with the foam. Always rinse the rings in tank not tap water, same with foam. The second foam on top just reduces the flow of water and efficieny in my own opinion. I have ran two foams and IMO found it not as effective. Make sure the rings run on top of the foam to aviod clogging the rings.
