I want to combine my freshwater community tanks into 1 large one 90-100g with 48" length but I can't find anything over 55g here that isn't insanely overpriced. Most plans for building tanks tell you what thickness, what to cut each piece at, and how to stick the whole thing together. What I'm missing is how do I then put a canopy on and do I cover the top edges? I want to just use a glass canopy and set compact flourescent striplights on it. My purchased tanks all have black plastic around the edge and through the center that the glass sits on and probably reinforces the tank some. What could I use like that? Also anyone know what sizes glass tops come in or the width of a compact striplight so I can decide the width of my tank?

Hi,
All of the DIY tanks I have seen plans for were a
combination of wood and glass. I have not seen
plans for an all glass tank though I'm sure they
exist. I measured the inside of my tank (it has
the plastic trim that you mention) leaving a 1/16 of
an inch shy all the way around. Then I took those
measurments to a glass store and had them cut it and
polish the edges for me. I used 1/4 inch tempered glass.
the correct glass is green when viewed on its cut edges.

In my tank, I left the glass an inch less than the total
depth so there was room for the pH probe, CO2 system
tubes, and heater to stick up.

I'm sure that the tank trim is available, somewhere,
so that you could purchase it in 6 or 8 ft strips and
cut/silicone it in place over the edges of your new
tank. I just don't know where you might purchase it.
For starters, I'd try at the glass store where you
buy the pieces.
