in canister filters, it's free for all, you use whatever you want.
ehfimech is the equivalent of coarse sponge, that goes first to filter out larger particles, so your setup is a little strange, bio balls before the coarse filter?

I think in any type of filtration process the course is always placed first to remove all the heavy waste then as the water procedes further it can go through several stages but should be just that little bit finer to remove the finer particals, then the last filter can be two fine ones placed together or an ultra fine to return the water to the tank as clean as posible.
Further more it must be all pulled down regualy and cleaned then replaced as required.

I have a Large Eheim Pro and the next pull down I will be replacing the single fine layer with two fine layers. The Eheim has plenty of pressure as not to worry it at all.
I hope this a help to you.

i have just recently set up a canister filter for my tank. it had almost no intructions and after what i've read on this thread, my filter is stacked backwards! However on the other hand, the difference in water quality since I got the filter has been fantastic so I don't think you can make too many big mistakes with a canister filter.

I can not help you there. Next time you pull it appart look to see where the inlet and outlets are this should be the big answer.

Or some member might have one. The other answer is ask where you bought it from.
