Is there anything else I can use besides nylon (pantyhose) to cover filter intakes in tanks where I have fry?

I've never tried it myself, having always used air-driven sponges when I had fry...

BUT...

I have heard (probably in old posts here actually) that you can use a sponge over the intake stem (I think some people even do this as a pre-filter for day-to-day use).

I'm presuming something like the standard Hagen Elite sponge thingum would work: http://www.franksaquarium.com/sponge_filters.htm
Otherwise a sponge that is designed to be used with a powerhead may do the trick.

Eheim actually have a small sponge that goes around the base of the intake. A stocking would not restrict the intake flow like some sponges which could block easly.

I use one of the white fishnets, fabric rather than net....only because that's what was on hand, however it significantly reduces water flow.

I needed something finer than nylons because of I have sand in the tank that keeps getting into the filter.

They make sponges for this and they can be found at most LFS. Do not use a kitchen sponge as a lot of them are treated with arsnic to keep it from molding and that would prob. not be good.

I personally use aqua clear mini or they are called the 20 now ( model name change ) I cut them in half then cut a hole in the center and them slide it over the intake. I use this too keep my intake from clogging due to my floating plants I have, but in the past have done for the purpose of keeping small fish out of the filter as well.

edit: I forgot to mention that its a good source of food for the fry as well as they will usually nibble at the sponge and pick out food through out the day.

Ive been using a Bath Sponge (new ofcourse) .. i just cut it in rough shape of filter intake.. washed it really well.. ( i was more consered about it getting bug spray from the store more than arsnic, first i heard of that but good to know) .. this worked alot better than nylons becuase it has more surface area so it wouldnt clog up as fast.

Id go with a sponge.. if u can get one thats used in a filter all the better. but they worked best for me..

GOod luck.. Fun stuff 8-)

Tule (like the stuff they make balerina's skirts out of) works great IME. just cut out a circle of the stuff & use a rubber bad to hold it in place

This is what I did, if you have an aquaclear sponge or only have one, get a sharp knife, cut a square from the middle of the sponge, cut it enough to cover the intake, now after you cut the square, cut a line in the middle of your square then just slip inn into your intake, there thats it, it shouldn't fall off.
