OK can someone please help as I give up!

I have an eheim 2217 & everytime I unplug it - to clean out or aquascape, move house,or just run out of electric. I cant get the damn thing going again. It has power but sometimes I can only get it to work if I hold it upsidedown & sometimes it works but with a poor flow. Eventaually after about 2 hours tinkering I can get it to work ok.

I guess I'm doing the wrong combo of turning it on, opening or closing the sucking or spitting valves....

please help, their website isnt clear.

Anita.

Quickest way to get it fixed or find out how to get it going correctly is to contact Eheim Direct and ask them also contact you local distributer for help, Eheim will give you that info.

Anita, don't feel bad I have a eheim 2213 and all I've ever done with it is cuss and scream at it...here are some steps I use to get it going each time, and so far it seems to help

1. dumped out funky water
2. drained hoses of funky water
3. topped tank off to the edge
4. disconnected input hose, and blew out
5. sucked on input hose to get water to breaking point
6. set break thingies so as not to flood living room again
7. connected to bottom where it belongs
8. topped canister off to the edge
9. blew into output hose to clear lines incase
10. sucked output hose to brakes
11. set brakes.
12. plugged in top piece of unit
13. found out the motor does work and suck/blow
14. connected output hose to top of motor
15. unplugged unit
16. put lid on tight and locked latches
17. turned unit upside down, right side up, and back and forth repeatedly.
18. released input valve brakes
19. flip upside down again and again
20. plugged in unit
21. flip unit upside down again and again
22. released brakes on output unit
23. turned unit upside down again and again and again
24. raised unit up to touch bottom of stand
25. set into bucket to hold water if need be

if that makes any senseotherwise here is the thread I made about my [link=damn thing]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Technical%20Tinkering/59727.html" style="COLOR: #FF1493[/link]

Best of luck, Heidi

LOL Houston is so right.
These filters can be a real pain to get going.
Heres what I do to get mine going after a clean:
prestep 1: Before unplugging Canister,
set the shutoff valves closed. This will
cause water to stay in the tubes while
you are doing change. Then unplug filter.
1) Top Tank Up as Full as it will go
2) Fill Canister All the way to Lip
3) Connect Canister to Tubing.
4) Plug In Filter
5) Release Valves
6) This almost always works now. Good luck!

well I'm glad it's not just me.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I guess it's a case of 'suck it & see' (from a local TV advert for headache pills).

The moral of the story is don't buy the cheepest filter you can get away with just so yuo can set up your tank quickly....

Thanks again.

Anita.

Funny you say that, since Eheims are one of the most expensive filters. I think that most people are having trouble with the old eheims. The new ones are great, mine took one press of the self-prime, plug in and away it went.

Yes, I dont know about Cheap.
The Eheim 2217 here sells for about 299.00+ retail.
I got mine brand new in box on Ebay for 140.00
including shipping, and even that isnt cheap.
Fluval and Magnum Canisters are the only two cheap
canister filters I know of.
Eheim is also renowned for its quality.
I wouldnt give up that filter, its one of the best
filters on the market.
Sure its tough to get going, but I wouldnt trade mine
for any other filter. Nothing else can come close to
its quality.

in the UK it's £79. Which was the cheepest filter that would do my 125g (UK) tank.

Next time I'll stay with the same make but go for one of the heater/filters in one with a primer.

I will soon however be changing the media from the foam pads to the little bits.
