Got into the hobby six months ago and I'm already up to my 3rd tank all with HOB bio wheel type filters. The cost for all the filter cartridges is starting to get high and I've been wondering if their are any websights out there that show you how to make DIY filter cartridges. I know they just have cardon and the foam material and I see the carbon being sold in bottles buthave not seen the foam being sold.

Well one is an eclipse system 12 I just set up haven't changed the filter yet and the others I brought like 3 filters for about $10 if I remember correctly. On my penguin I brought 12 filters for about $15 on ebay but they are replacement filters not original. They seem to be made at home but so far they work pretty well.

Strip the filter pad and carbon from the existing frames when the material becomes dirty. Purchase sheets of media either on-line or at you lfs the n cut them to fit your filter frame. Generally, carbon is used to remove impurities and medication from your tank and is not necessary.
