besides adding a sponge around the intake, is there a way to keep it clear, b/c i have alot of java moss in the tank, and the fishes trash it around, and it gets tangled in the filter.

There are plenty of open weave materials around. Just make sure they are Aqu safe. Panty Hose is very good this can be held in place by a rubber band.

Chris,

I remember to have seen somewhere that there are pre-filters that are attached to the filter intake. I think Bob Wesolowski uses them.

You could maybe use one of these and frequently just detach them for cleaning.

I have an Aquaclear 70 and I use one of these and it works great. It should fit perfectly onto the end of the intake tube of the 300.
