i have an emperor 400, it seems that it makes quite some humming noise. i have my tank in my bedroom, the filter is about 6ft away. does anyone here have an emperor 400, does your filter run silently or is this a normal thing?
if you have an eheim 2028, this would be great so we have a point of reference between the noise.

oh.. this filter is new, no debris in the impeller chamber. everything is tight.

My first thought was you should try pushing down on the impellar housing. Somehow, those things work there way loose. But, since you said every thing is tight, you might have already tried that. If you didn't check that, that's most likely the cause.

I run an Eheim 2026 with 2 emperor 400's and an aquaclear 500 on my 125g SA cichlid tank. The Eheim as said before is silent. The Aquaclear is also virtually noise free. Unfortunatly, the emperor's always seem to have a slight hum to them. Although, I have found that pulling the spray bars out of the intake housing releases trapped air and will lessen the sound. I have also noticed that if you play with the flow rate (the little gray tab that sticks out through the top of the filter cover) it will adjust and quite down even more. HTH

the lowest flow setting seems to have the least noise, so i left it at that at night, and full flow during the day when i'm not near the tank.

gudel, another trick you could try is to plug and unplug your emperor 4 or 5 times. This gets rid of the air in the intake tube and will also help. Forgot to mention that earlier.
