If not, soak in water for a few hours and then gently wipe clean. (I know a dirty impeller and dirty impeller well can make an Aquaclear filter refuse to start.) There may be little rubber feet at the ends of the assembly. If these are worn out or if the shaft is worn or the impeller is worn, it may be beyond saving. I once inherited an AC that had calcium buildup on the impeller shaft. I ordered a replacement shaft (the owner had already tried replacing the impeller assembly) and after installing the new shaft it ran like a dream. Some brands of impellers have the shaft built into the impeller, like the Marineland Magnums. The AC impeller sits over a shaft that stays fixed in the motor housing (unless you yank it out to inspect or replace it). The only impeller using units I am familiar with do not require any lubrication. They work by an alternating current in the motor driving a magnet on the impeller shaft. IS your impeller magnetic? |

Its likely worth keeping, but if you need a functional filter anytime soon, go scoop an AquaClear. |

I fixed it by soaking the impellor in a bowl of vinegar for 4-5 hours. The vinegar dissolves mineral deposits that accumulate from impurities in the water. I'd give the impellor a soak in some vinegar and a good rinse and see if it works any better ![]() |

Bob Wesolowski![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1379 Kudos: 1462 Registered: 14-Oct-2004 ![]() ![]() | This HOB filter was widely used in the 70s. It had a riser tube that maintained suction when placed under the water level of the HOB, much like an AC. Water was drawn from the HOB and back to the aquarium through an arm that could be directed by the impeller. You should be able to disassemble the impeller housing to clean the impeller and its cavity. Use a small tube brush in the cavity. Traditionally, the unit was assembled with a filter pad over the grating with carbon above the filter pad. Today, I would substitute ceramic rings above the pad. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |
