well on the information square thing, it said..
model A
120V
19W
60HZ
Hartz mountian corp
6105

and it has 2 parts where the water flows out on opposit sides of where the water gets sucked up, awout an inch in width. it has a large contraption on top which i discovered after tearing it appart has a spin wheel and a few other comtaptions, the spin wheel thing is much larger than the one in my 10-15 filter. it has a back that iv never seen before, o put the floss on the bottom, and it has a grate so u dont even realy need filter floss but the grate spaces are like 2-3 mm spaces, so i will be bying some of the cut it yourself stuff. and the water gets sucked through a tube and is put directly into the back.

it wouldent work at first but after i fiddled with it for a few hours i plugged it in for a fraction of a sec and i filaly heard sound. any idea what this is?

Even though I collect vintage aquarium stuff, I cannot say that I am familiar ith the filter you have, but I will see if I can find out anything.

I know nothing about this filter.

That said, I would start by inspecting the impeller assembly and well area. Clean? If not, soak in water for a few hours and then gently wipe clean. (I know a dirty impeller and dirty impeller well can make an Aquaclear filter refuse to start.)

There may be little rubber feet at the ends of the assembly. If these are worn out or if the shaft is worn or the impeller is worn, it may be beyond saving. I once inherited an AC that had calcium buildup on the impeller shaft. I ordered a replacement shaft (the owner had already tried replacing the impeller assembly) and after installing the new shaft it ran like a dream. Some brands of impellers have the shaft built into the impeller, like the Marineland Magnums. The AC impeller sits over a shaft that stays fixed in the motor housing (unless you yank it out to inspect or replace it).

The only impeller using units I am familiar with do not require any lubrication. They work by an alternating current in the motor driving a magnet on the impeller shaft. IS your impeller magnetic?

Nope, just still looking...there isn't a lot of readily available info on vintage aquarium equipment. Its likely worth keeping, but if you need a functional filter anytime soon, go scoop an AquaClear.

The same thing happened to the impellor on one of my Penguin 125's. I fixed it by soaking the impellor in a bowl of vinegar for 4-5 hours. The vinegar dissolves mineral deposits that accumulate from impurities in the water.

I'd give the impellor a soak in some vinegar and a good rinse and see if it works any better

This HOB filter was widely used in the 70s. It had a riser tube that maintained suction when placed under the water level of the HOB, much like an AC. Water was drawn from the HOB and back to the aquarium through an arm that could be directed by the impeller.

You should be able to disassemble the impeller housing to clean the impeller and its cavity. Use a small tube brush in the cavity.

Traditionally, the unit was assembled with a filter pad over the grating with carbon above the filter pad. Today, I would substitute ceramic rings above the pad.
