Had to get a new heater to put in a 10 gal. No fish were in it so I bought 3 Cherry Barbs and put in there. The heater has gotten up to 80. I keep turning it down but the temp keeps rising. They dont seem to be stressed. One stays alone and the other two stay together. I turned the heater off until someone could tell me what to do. So what do I do??? The heater is a hang on and just has a higher/lower dial....no numbers.

I would take it back and get them to test it before you boil the fish. Think about getting a better one with the markings on it. It does not have to have numbers just little markers to show you where the heater is set at.
Some do have the temperature numbers but these are usually the more expensive types.

I would take it out, inspect it and see if there is anything that doesn't look quite right in the electronics (anything burned, loose wires, cracks etc) through the glass. If it looks ok, I'd place it in a bucket/bowl/tank (if it's plastic don't let the heater touch the side) and put a thermometer in it. Turn the heater all the way down (make sure you're turning the right way, they can be tricky) and bring it up until the little light turns on. Let it sit for a few hours, and check the temp, see if it's steady.

If it's not, be like keith and return it defective for a new one.

The heater is the single most important thing in the fish tank, and you want a good one!

Ok. Took it out and put it in some water. Now, how is this going to affect my fish? Their water going from about 74 to 80 and now down again?

Keep an eye on them, and try and insulate the tank if you can with a blanket or some styro.

It's better to take the risk of a little ich than boil them

Are you sure you doing the right thing as this E/B could also have problems. Also can you return it and get your money back if it turns out to be a dud in a very short time?

If you buy a good one directly from a good LFS there should be no problem at all. My Sera heaters both carry a two year gurantee. They are one of the best but also one of the dearest. You cannot have a faulty heater at all. You could end up replacing several cheepies for the price of a good quality unit.

Well, the person has good feedback. Most of the time, they will work with you it they sell something that doesnt work right because they dont want the negative feedback.

While I'm one of the first to go to ebay for something expensive it's not worth it for a heater that only costs around $15. Alot of people on ebay sort of cheat to get good feedback. They make deals to sell alot of stuff to someone for cheap so long as they give them good feedback for each item. Then the people who have a few bad transactions don't really show up on the feedback rating.
I'm currently replacing most of my heaters with stealth heaters. They cost a few dollars more but are quite reliable and won't break down if you just forget to unplug it when doing a water change or even when emptying a tank. Won't break if you drop them or a fish messes with them. While the dial isn't the most detailed the heater is quite accurate. The 100w or higher ones are also on sale at bigals. Wal Mart doesnt sell the heaters with numbers. The Whisper ones are what I have now in my other tanks and the temp drops about 4 degrees at night in the tanks with those heaters. So I dont want to spend $20 on another one of those. My LFS sells the ones with numbers but I think they are around $40 and I cant afford that. The one I first wrote about in this post works fine now. It was just a matter of getting it adjusted. I just dont like it because it hangs on and the adjuster wont make it tight enough to fit my tank so it tends to move around when the cords, during water chnages and ect. There are some others on Ebay also. Im hoping I get outbid on this one I am winning right now. It has the numbers and comes with a 10 gal tank, new filter, in box and a pump, new in box. The shipping is $10 and it stands at $1 right now.
