re-sealing tanks, is it safe?

When you say safe do you mean it will hold water or do you mean for how long.

I will only speak from a glaziers experience. No glazier will gurantee it, and few if any will repair it.
I recently broke one and the insurance company could not find a glazing/aquarium that would repair and gurantee it.

There is no way of actually knowing how long will it last. My knowledge is from glaziers, it depends on the age & type of the glass (in a Aqu) Apprently the older & quality of the glass, depends on the time before it leaks again.

Also a well made tank can even have a short life, it is basically the water, how the tank is supported.

No mine was replaced as I refused to have it repaired and no one would do the job any way.

i had a 10g start leaking... i re-siliconed it and it's still working fine - going on about 6 years or so. then again, there isn't much pressure in a 10 gallon tank so it's hard to say what would happen in a 4' tank. on the other hand, my parents had a 35g re-siliconed and it's still going strong after about 10 years, and i re-siliconed a 33 gallon about 4 months ago, and although that's not much time to test the results - it's not leaking yet. just make sure you don't miss any spots and i'm sure it would be fine.

is it worth having someone do it? I would thinkn no, he glass is the cheap part of all this. You can find a 4ft for around $60-100 for just the bare tank.

So do you feel that you can reseal a tank and that it will last a good amount of time?

I would only do it without the fish for a few weeks. Then again I am handy and would feel fine building a tank, so a repair is not a big issue. Just make sure you use the right tools and the right stuff for the repair.

It can't be that bad, St George re-seals tanks.

its all glass and silicone, if its prepared properly, it should last as long as a tank made with the same glass. (glass age might well play a part)
