i know that this might seem like an elementary question but how does a underground filter work? i cant find it on this site anywhere and, do i need one if i have an over the side filter and, would one work with sand if i even need one? the reason i ask is because i am looking to get a 55 gallon tank.

when you hook up an air pump to the output "posts" of the UGF (under gravel filter) it creaats a suction that sucks the water.

The filter sucks water through the gravel, in turn dragging the big particles in the gravel.

You "clean" the filter by doing gravel vac's

You don't need an undergravel filter and most people would advise against them. They suck the water down through a plate along with fish poop and other things. This ends up creating an area you can't clean out easily and eventually can cause alot of problems with water quality. Undergravel filters do not work with sand. The best filter for the best price is probably power filters/HOB. Then cannister filters which are more expensive. Either of those would work great so long as you get one rated high enough for your tank.

If you have a UGF, i would recommend using another filter also (i would suggest the Emperor 400)

No, they cant be used with sand, but if you use it with gravel, they are great, maby people say that they are horrible, and clog, but the one on my dads tank has been running fine for 15 yrs now.

the underground filter goes under the gravel and u can mount powerheads to make the ugf work. i think it pulls dirt toward the gravel and bacteria happens. i think it is good for all tanks even with other filters. i dont believe it works with sand bottoms.

I think you have been explained the basics and how they work.

I have a 5ft tank fully UGF I also run a large Eheim canister. I have been using UGFs for 30+ years and never a problem. I think its either you like them or you dont.

I suppose this will confuse you even more now. I think you will find many experienced members still use UGF and never have have problems at all.
