r0B3y,

I have two sponges on my AC. I prefer the two sponges to provide both mechanical and biologic filtration. The bottom sponge is squeezed clean when I do water changes each week. The top sponge than becomes the bottom sponge.

I have lots of plants in most of my tanks, so 2 sponges in each AC, as Bob has above, will do the trick. If you don't have many/any plants, then the BioMax on top of the sponges will help. Save your carbon for removing odors, chemicals, or medications from your tank. Make sure your tank is properly cycled (or have lots of plants), have the appropriate fish load for your tank and you won't need to use the AmmoRid.

Just the foam in mine....one HOB has nylon over the intake with phosphate reducing beads in it. Nylon to block the sand the beads to be in a high flow area.
Keep carbon on hand for when it's needed....I've debated the ceramic noodle things...never really wanted to spend extra on them though ...the foam's always worked just fine for me.

I currently have sponge/carbon/ceramic noodles (removed my Ammonia media tonight). I added the noodles tonight after reading about them here. It was only $4.70AU for them in a bag, although it is a little small for my AquaClear 300 [70]. I am going to use 2 sponges on the next water change, as that sounds like a good idea. I might even buy a media bag and then buy the noodles separately - how often would you change them?
With the noodles added to the filter the water flow is alot quicker and the fish absolutely love it!!! They are quite funny to watch in the current - looks like they are surfing

Just curious as to what the difference is between the Bio-Max rings and Fluval Pre-Filter noodles??? I bought the Pre-Filter noodles that are used in Fluvals and using these as my top layer in my Aqualclear 300.

Is there much difference? The Bio-Max rings look smaller but other than that the descriptions are the same. So I am confused

I have two sponges that I rotate during my water changes. The bottom one gets cleaned very well and goes top the top, the top one gets only a few light squeezes and goes to the bottom.

I also use activated carbon inserts to remove medication from the tank, but only for maybe 2 to 3 days.

I believe that all other additions are not making much of a difference, at least in my planted tank.
