10G And Tetras | |
newfishfriend Hobbyist Posts: 90 Kudos: 142 Votes: 3 Registered: 16-Jan-2004 | Hello everyone Just wondering how many neon tetras I can safely put into my 10g tank. I know they should be kept in schools so I am hoping my tank would be big enough. I was thinking of getting 8 or so. What do you think? |

If all these conditions are perfect eg Exellent filtration, airstone, heavly live planted, and a 30% weekly water changes without fail, there should be no problem even up to ten providing there are no other fish at all. Saying that 10 would be too many as you should have some fish to help removing any of the algae which will naturally form on the plants. I also would suggest Cardinal Tetras as they are a stronger variety and if possible ger the small ones as they will adapt very easly also be prepared as both varities can introduce Ich into a tank very quickly. Try to buy established stock. I am pushing the limits in my Betta Tank. Look in My Profile and the Photo Bucket for more infomation. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. I would leave them on their own though. I had 8 neons in my planted 10g with a male betta and they were extremely timid. I think the Betta scared them because they hid most of the time. Make sure you have alot of plants...to make them feel comfortable. Cardinals tend to be a little more hardy than neons. So if you can find them, that would be a better alternative. If you keep up with water changes then you should be fine. My tank parameters went crazy recently (3ppm of ammonia ), but I started falling behind on water changes and gravel vacs. And I had 8 neons, a male betta, and 2 ottos. I suggest just getting the 8 neons or cardinals. They tend to do better the larger group you can get so 8 is a good number IMO. |

The otos are great little fish that constantly eat algae from every surface in the tank. I am also fond of panda cories, I have 4 in my 10g and they are winsome little things, they get along fine with the otos, the harlies and the betta. They have a corner at the back of the tank where they like to have the occasional 'Panda Pile' LOL. It is cute to see them all in a pile. But if you want just tetras then I'd go for a school of 8 cardinals, they have great colouring all on their own! "If you're afraid you'll make a mistake, you won't make anything." -Family Circus |

This will probably involve you in a major logistical exercise, but if you can find a Tetra species known as Hyphessobrycon amandae, then these will be an even better choice than Neons. Why? Get this - their maximum adult size is a lowly 20 millimetres! You could have 8 of those no problem. go take a look at them here! |
