I keep a tank of danios. My tank has live plants and a snail also. I have seen bettas with dropsy before but never any other species.

2 of my danios have gone missing in the past couple of days. Gone without a trace. Then last night I noticed that one of the others looks like its scales are protruding out like a pinecone... yet it's not bloated in any way. I'm sure that today i'll return home to find it gone also.

How does dropsy happen? I'm guessing that it's going to wipe out my entire school. The other remaining danios appear to be showing beginning stages also. What happened?

I already have plans to restart fresh and make a new tank setup with new stock once they are all gone... but will I also have to replace my plants? I don't know anything about where dropsy can live in the tank. I know it can spread to other fish, but what about plants and snails?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

i believe that drospy is caause by poor water quality. it is when internal organs fail and fuilds build up causeing the scales to pop. i beleieve it is pretty much unfixable.

i think it is a symptom so it can't be spread like an diesases or infections.

Can you tell us a bit about the tank?
Size
tank mates, how many of each
ammonia
nitrite
nitrate
cleaning schedule

This will help us rule out water quality issues. Dropsy is usually an indicator of bad water quality.
