TopperMcFly Fingerling Posts: 17 Registered: 27-Sep-2006 | I got some matae cats cheap because they were dyeing off. One had died but the other 4 have made it about 10 days. I have notice labored breathing and some scratching against the drift wood. I believe the aeration is adequate. I am running a Rena suitable for a 35 gallon tank in a 29 at full bore plus I run a bio wheel filter which also provides very good aeration. The Ammonia and Nitrites read 0. The nitrates are low and the temp was 78. I do not see any ich spots or any spots or marks for that matter. I put in copper safe by the advise of my LFS and realized my plants are going to croak. They are java ferns so I am hoping they are hardy enough to tough it out. Proly in vein, I did a 10 gallon water (out of 29) and ran a pouch of new carbon for an hour. I then removed the carbon and treated with super ich cure from api, which I have used before and really like. I am slowly raising temp to 82 over 48 hour period. Anyway. What is everyone's thoughts? I am barking up the right tree here? Again, labored breathing, scratching, no spots or markings, good aeration, PH 6.7 Temp 78. The Plattys and angel are doing fine so far. |

You risk killing all your current fish plus the meds to treat illnesses will kill plants and possibly your biological filter. It's a good way to wipe out your whole tank setup especially if you don't know what illness your dealing with. You need to remove them to a hospital tank so you can treat them without putting stress on your current fish and killing your plants. |

Corys can be killed by meds with dyes (methylene blue, malachite green), by aquarium salt, or by copper. If the med has any of these, discontinue the use. Do you have them in a Quarantine tank? You should definitely not have put them in your main tank if they were sick to begin with. I would isolate and treat with an anti-parisitic that is safe for scaleless fish, and with a broad spectrum antibiotic like Furan 2 or Maracyn 2. You have the very big problem because of exactly what you have done buying sick fish. What can be done too late it is possible it could have already infected the tank and here is the big problem as to what is the actual problem. You cannot blame the LFS and get them to take them back as you bought them "cheap". It would be useless going back even to get any medications or any supplies from them again as all they are instered in is $$$$ not the customer. Why did you decide to treat as for Ich??? I would take all of the Marae Cats from the tank first and put them in a seperate tank and try to save the others first. Here is a link that decribes many problems have a look and get back to us as quickly as posible. Even if all the Cats die it is posible the tank will be infected therefore you will have to treat the tank.
