What are its tankmates and what is the tank size? Maybe it had an argument with another fish.
If the area of missing scales does not seem to be infected and the fish is eating and generally behaving as normal then there is not much to do.
If things change then let us know and we will advise.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Adding to Lindy's reply do you have any sharp objects in the tank? If the fish was suddenly statled it could have easly knoked into sone sharp object in the tank. Certainly get back if the problem persists.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Another vote for leave it alone here. Just keep your water parameters good and try to find what the fish hit/argued with. It'll be fine in no time

at the moment he is only sharing the tank with a duboisi but they dont seem to argue much and its a big tank, the scale loss is completely over him like from tail to head both sides but today looks like they are growing back a bit so i agree i need to leave alone, i dont like using chemicals at all

Given that being the tank situation I would be thinking about bacterial and fungal causes. If he remains in a state of recovery leave him as he is, but if it gets worse consider using a little pimafix or melafix to start with.

Its one thing not to use chemicals if they can be avoided, thats good practise, but if things take a turn for the worse, dont hesitate to use them. Thats what theyre there for! Ive seen far to many uneccesary deaths from holding off on treatments until its too late to save the fish. Dont make that mistake. The way to avoid this mistake is of course careful and regular observation, and a clear and objective analysis of the fish's condition.
